Website

Going to be doing something different with this blog now. My website will be live soon and I'm going to use this blog to update people on my current projects.

This week mostly I've been doing transcripts for, my friend, the talented Mihir Desai's new documentary "Common Thread." Here's a poster for it:

So, be sure to check out www.JustineGendron.com and I'll try to keep everyone updated.

Favorite films of the decade?

Here I am about to lose my street cred.
(oldest to newest)

I'm sure movies that I've seen recently need to digest in whatever organ movies digest in.

District 9

I didn't like District 9. First of all it was just probably too gruesome for me. Anything with someone's fingernails falling off and I'm done! But then there was brain matter splattering on the camera every two seconds near the end. Gross, gross, gross!

Speaking of camera, it looked like the cinematographer was having a lot of fun. There was lots of usage of security/documentary/news camera. Oh and some sort of "gun cam." It was interesting, fun. But if we're always being "watched" why did the film feel so secluded? I feel like everyone evil was running around in this one little place and no one in the outside world said anything. That's another thing, everyone was so evil. Even down to the white guy evil military.

Its the Apartheid meets Independence Day and a dash of The Fly...and then after an hour and a half it turns into Transformers.

Deadly Strangers

Every year I give part of my bizarre stocking-stuffers to Jimmy. This year it was 250 temporary tattoos. Last year it was a million erasers and a Zac Efron pen. I believe the year before that was a bunch of discount horrible 1970s horror movies. Last night we actually watched one.

I picked the one with the most star power- Hayley Mills! It was 1974's Deadly Strangers. The film is all about you (kinda) worrying about our young Hayley as Ms. Belle as she hitches a ride across the British countryside with an excaped mental patient on the loose. All the while we are battered with fantasy sequences from her driver companion, Stephen, about his inability to orgasm and delight in being a peeping tom AND flashbacks of Belle's early childhood and sexual abuse by her uncle. Mmmhmmmmmm. Oh man and then this old scottish fisherman show's up and tries to mack it on Belle. After all of this I don't think it actually ever made a statement on sex or gender or the criminally insane. Everyone was just a pervert.

My Movie Year in Review (2009) pt2

Happy New Year!

As with following the past years traditions, here I am listing every movie I saw this year. Of course also with tradition I see more movies every year. So this year the number is 76! Last year was 50 or something... anyway! Since I already listed the 2008 movies here's a list of the ones prior:

Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas), The Departed, Traffic, Girls Rock!, No Country for Old Men, Penelope, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Winter Passing, La jetee (The Pier), Lost in La Mancha, Sans soleil (Sunless), Spider-Man 3, Bye Bye Birdie (1995), Happy-Go-Lucky, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Chop Shop, Indie Sex, Cidade de Deus (City of God), Enchanted, For the Bible Tells Me So, The King of Kong, A la folie... pas du tout (He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not), House on Haunted Hill (1959), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The 'Burbs, Mom and Dad Save the World, Teeth, Thirteen, Les miserables, The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Metropolis, The Monster Walks, Garbage Warrior, Serenity, Stranger than Fiction, Everything is Illuminated, The Golden Compass, Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate), Singin' in the Rain, The Birds, Cashback, Only You, Brick, Cabaret, and Paranoid Park.

... that's a lot.

Now the movies of 2009!
Transmissions - I'm not sure I can comment on this without commenting on the filmmaker even though the film is pretty much about him.
Away We Go - Just re-read my review of this where I said I was slightly disappointed with this. I would really like to watch this again. John Krasinski was awesome.
Hannah Free - Another film i worked on! I thought it was good but had too many makeout scenes.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Just watched this again the other night. What a long movie! Still would rather have it focus on the horcruxes and Voldemort's past.
Coraline - Didn't leave me satisfied.
(500) Days of Summer - I really need to re-watch this, but I really liked it.
Coco avant Chanel - I thought this was cute. Love Audrey.
Make the Yuletide Gay - Super cute gay Christmas movie!
Paper Heart - I think it missed on its execution.
Up - Cute yet predictable.
Star Trek - Boo to this giant lens flare of a movie.
Up in the Air - Super fantastic! Awesome mise en scene. Awesome editing. Just a touch predictable.
Fantastic Mr. Fox - Got a bit boring, felt like we were stuck with the storyline, couldn't figure out the theme. Enjoyed Jason Schwartzman's character.

Ok the movies that stood out to me the most that I saw this year (and that I'll pobably buy on DVD if I haven't already) are: Let the Right One In, City of God, Teeth, Metropolis, Serenity, Singin' In The Rain, Brick, Away We Go, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, (500) Days of Summer, and Up in the Air.

What do I want to see?
Moon
Whip It
District 9
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men
No Impact Man
Where The Wild Things Are
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
